Air Purifiers for Mold

Mold is an essential part of nature, but it should be left out of the home.  Leaves and tress may need the help to decay, but we’d like to keep our homes as rot and mold free as possible.  Without the knowledge to do so however, it won’t be surprising to find growing fungi in the dark damp spots of our houses.  That already gives as a clue on how to tackle this problem.  These flying spores just love attaching to moist surfaces, and if left unchecked could spread like wildfire as long as walls, floors, and any other surfaces stay damp.  This is where an effective air purifier will come in handy.

A good air purifying machine will suck in unclean air, leaving your home a breathable haven.  Before unwanted spores can even reach their wet and cozy destinations, they should be sucked in and trapped by these machines.  This is all a quality HEPA type air purifier needs to do to accomplish its duty.  HEPA stands for High Efficiency Particulate Air.  By filtering particles as small as 0.3 microns, the air that passes through is as fresh as a newly plucked flower.  This is due to the fact that the smallest Mold particle is only 1 micron, so if it gets caught in a HEPA purifier’s pull, there’s no escape.  These devices don’t actively kill mold though, but without the moisture they need to reproduce, there’s no chance of growth inside the purifier and in time, death is inevitable.  Some machines even combine with an ultra violet light system to actively kill these floating irritants.

There are also other filters that work together with the HEPA system, but it has been recently discovered that what you shouldn’t get is an ionizing air purifier.  These devices are hardly effective in cleaning the air of unwanted elements, and to top it off, they add harmful levels of ozone.  This is especially bad since too much ozone can make people with respiratory problems feel worse.  It also injures the airways of regular people to the point that they also feel shortness of breath and wheezing.  You’re better off with HEPA purifiers.  Those ionizers are just a waste of space, energy and money.

As much as these quality air purifiers work, they shouldn’t be left alone in dealing with mold.  Their filters should always be replaced when necessary, and this will ensure a longer life span for your machines.  Air purifiers can be little expensive, so caring for them will hurt your wallet less as well.  What will always be a concern is electricity, as mold prone areas will need to be exposed to the purifier for long periods of time. Some even suggest 24 hour runs.  So to make it all worth it, help with the mold cleaning as well.  Use vacuums with HEPA filters on carpets and use mold killing sprays on all surfaces.  In time, your home will mold and musky odor free, and it better be for the price you’ll be paying.
