Dealing With Hidden Mold

When disaster strikes, it leaves a big mess behind.  For something like a flood, a lot of property damage can be left in its wake.  It’s not only your things that will be affected either, you can get ill as well.  Bacteria from the water can cause many diseases.  In the face of all of this, it can be easy to overlook some hidden effects as well.  Many areas in the home can become infected with mold as these fungi spores just love sticking on to wet areas.  Some will be visible, but a lot of the time, you’ll have nasty fungi growing in places you wouldn’t even think of.  So it is important to learn how to search for signs of hidden mold.  Whether it be caused by a flood or a simple leak, it is important to perform this check at least once a year.

There are a few places where you can first check for mold growth.  Key areas are the attic, basement, bathrooms, and the kitchen.  These are all areas that get wet the most due to moisture build up and other obvious reasons.  One should look behind cabinets and closets for a start.  You should develop a trained eye however, for certain things like mild discoloration on the walls due to water exposure.  You may have to tear behind wall paper to find what you are looking for.  While going through your search though, remember that disturbed spores can end up flying all over the place, putting you, your family, and the rest of the house in varying levels of danger.  Be as gentle as possible when trying to uncover the location of your mold problem.  Also, never forget your all important mold protection gear when doing this.

Even if no floods or obvious leaks occurred, it is still important to check under places like carpets and loose flooring.  If it is still difficult to find or if it seems like there are no visual signs of mold, let your body do the talking.  Do you smell extra mustiness?  Do you feel better when away from the house for extended periods?  You might want to purchase a simple mold testing kit that can check the air for traces of fungal spores.  If there really is a presence of mold, then you’re going to have to take a step further.

You’re going to have to bore small holes on the walls most likely to contain mold.  There are several guides that can show you have to do this.  If the task is too daunting, a mold removal service can do it for you.  They have several ways of checking behind any surface.  If mold is found, cleaning or renovating will have to be done, depending on the severity of the situation.  Again, you can choose to do this yourself with a variety of effective sprays, shields, and air purifiers or you can leave it to the professionals.  To lessen on cost, try to safely do it yourself.  You can also test the mold to see if it is toxic or not.  If it is merely a cosmetic concern, simple sprays will do the trick.  A huge cleaning job can be very expensive, so do the necessary checking.
