Dealing With Mold in a Home

Mold and mildew are two pretty common problems in moisture rich conditions, and this can lead people to treat them accordingly.  One can be complacent and even underestimate the danger the presence of these spores present.  That is a deadly mistake, especially when dealing with it at home.  Left uncontrolled, an outbreak of mold around the home can cause a number of side effects, and this will make your family suffer.  The sensible thing to do is deal with the problem, and deal with it quickly.  How should one go about this though?  Well, there are a number of ways to follow and execute.

Dealing with mold can be split into two, prevention and reaction.  Since you’re reading this, you’re already probably suffering from mold problems one way or another, so let’s tackle reaction first.  First, for simple spots or darkened surfaces, a number of products are available.  They are fairly easy to use by following the instructions on the label.  A warning, though, bleach solutions may be cheap, but so is the outcome.  You’ll also have a hell of a time with the application, because bleach fumes can cause a number of irritating ailments.  It’s better to choose non toxic and maybe even environmentally friendly mold removal sprays.  Some take a while longer to show their effects, but they get through porous surfaces and cause little to no damage to any surface or you.  If you insist on the more affordable bleach type products though, then at least make sure the room being treated is well ventilated.  In either case, wear the necessary protective equipment like respirators, gloves, boots, vent free goggles, and yes, even a biohazard suit.  If the situation is a little dire and too much for you to handle, search for a trustworthy mold removal service specific to your needs.

After handling your mold situation, we move on to the next major step, preventing mold from easily coming back.  Repainting the walls with an anti mildew paint is a small but effective method, though only when the mold is gone.  Apply this when the walls are still teeming with wild spore life, and the mold will just eat it up.  Next, use a mold shield.  Products like Concrobium can seal many surfaces and protect from moisture, thereby preventing mold growth.  These work like a spray and only need to be applied several months at a time.  Both of these will do well to prevent spores from attaching on your walls, but the air is another matter.  They may be expensive, but using air purifiers with oxidizing capabilities can clean the air and even kill remaining mold.  General cleaning always helps, and airing out your house while letting the sun in will reinforce your efforts.  Keeping your home must and moist free is the key to mold free living.

Between reaction and prevention, the latter will definitely save you a lot more money and trouble in the future.  Home repairs and medical bills can hurt your bank account tremendously.  Investing in mold prevention is the best way to deal with mold at home.
