Dettox

When the human body is suffering from having ingested too many toxic substances, a spell in detoxification is necessary.  One must flush the body of unhealthy byproducts, and start treating it right.  The home is similar in a way.  With lack of care, all houses have the possibility of accumulating dust, dirt, bacteria, and even worse, mold.  The place in which one lives suddenly becomes a toxic den just itching to be detoxified.  This is why the makers of the mold and mildew removal product Dettox had the right idea in mind when naming the product. Does Dettox live up to its name, though?

Dettox is sold in a green spray bottle, not unlike several other brands in the market.   People say that the current bottle leaks less and does a better job of spraying the solution.  For two to three dollars, one can purchase a 17 ounce bottle of Dettox mold and mildew remover.  If it works for you, then it’s a cheap and effective purchase.  We mention this because Dettox is not a sure fire hit.  Its bottle is not the only thing similar to other offerings out there.  The active ingredient of Dettox is bleach, one of the most common cleaning chemicals around.  It also has 5% non ionic surfactant, something used in many detergents.  It is the bleach however, that does most of the grunt work in this product.  Not to say that it actually does much.

If you’ve already read other honest and well informed reviews of products with bleach, you’d already known that it is not a suggested mold remover.  Every single reason you would make against using the substance for mold is applicable with Dettox.  For one, bleach only kills molds on the surface of most materials, as these spores really dig in and take root.  Only water gets through, but bleach sits on top.  Another reason is that bleach becomes completely ineffective with time, even in a sealed container.  If Dettox worked for you before, this means it was a fresh batch, and that your mold was merely skin deep, so to speak.  Many products with bleach however, merely sit in warehouses and grocery aisles.  After only 90 days, half of that solution’s mold terminating power is long gone.  Finally, this reason is quite obvious.  The fumes that come from products with bleach can make an elephant fly.  Dizziness, coughing, irritated eyeballs, these are just a few of the health problems caused by bleach.

Let’s say you’ve already purchased the product though, what do you do then?  Well, protective gear is quite a necessity if you are sticking with this course of action.  Goggles, rubber gloves, and maybe something like a jumpsuit are necessary to protect your skin.  A face mask should also be worn.  Dettox can be applied to many bathroom surfaces other than wood, metals, and colored materials.  If it is a good batch, then most surface mold can be wiped away within 15 minutes of application.  It’s a cheap product, so if you’re willing to go through this a few times a year, then be our guest.  It should be noted that it is not recommended as the optimal solution to anything other than a surface mold infestation.
