Protective Gear for Mold
We were born with the innate desire and instinct to
protect ourselves. No one in his
right mind would willingly hurt his own body.
It is possible however, to not even know that you are bringing injury
to yourself, especially when the danger is impossible to perceive visually.
Microbes can cause a lot of harm to people, especially those like
mold and mildew. You may feel
the desire to clean out a wall darkened by spreading mold, but sometimes all
it takes is musty air and a weird smell for one to know something is wrong.
The cleaning must then be done, unless you want to wait for signs of
sickness before doing anything.
This article isn’t about our natural protective
instincts, however, but the gear needed to back up those instincts.
One can’t simply rush into a potentially dangerous situation without
the necessary tools for the job.
This little bit of knowledge applies to cleaning mold as well.
As we’ve already mentioned encountering musty air accompanied by bad
odors, it’s obvious that these spores are airborne as well.
An obvious protective piece of equipment would be a facial mask.
A simple dust mask won’t suffice, as mold can be as tiny as 0.5
microns and could easily go through such simple masks.
One can purchase quality fitted respirators at affordable prices, so
don’t skimp out. These are also
important not only for mold, but for the substances you will be using to
kill the mold. Sure, some are
“non-toxic” but it’s better to be safe.
Let us move on to the eyes.
Good goggles should be purchased so flying spores do not irritate
your valuable peepers. Also,
make sure that they do not have any openings.
Our skin can also be irritated and infected by fungi like mold, so
protective gloves would also be an important purchase, albeit a relatively
cheap one. Now, this piece may
sound extreme, but a biohazard suit is highly recommended for this scenario.
You don’t need to get the most expensive ones, but it is important
you have them. A good pair of
boots will also be handy.
Protective gear doesn’t have to be on one’s body
either, and it can be pretty high tech.
For mold, having an oxidizing or HEPA type air purifier around while
ridding yourself of infectious spores can greatly lessen the risks.
These machines suck in floating microbes and filter them from the
air. They may be expensive, but
they are quite effective. Money
really shouldn’t be an object when dealing with one’s health.
You might be thinking that all this is too much.
Remember, do not underestimate mold.
When left alone or misdiagnosed (which happens quite often) mold can
result to a long list of ill effects like migraines, nosebleeds, brain
damage, and even cancer. In the
face of this knowledge, your natural survival instincts should be kicking
in. Don’t worry though, with
these tools, you’ve got nothing to worry about.
An ounce of prevention, or in this case, protection, is worth a whole
lot of cure.
