Types of Mold Remediation Equipment

Arming yourself for a mold remediation endeavour can be rather daunting.  There is a wide variety of equipment out there available for purchase, and you want to be sure that you select the right tools for the task at hand.  There are implements for the task of remediation itself, objects to protect you from mold particles, and things that help you to contain the contamination while you are dealing with it. 

A high-efficiency particulate air (HEPA) vacuum is perhaps one of the most important devices in the arsenal of a mold remediator, siphoning away dangerous mold particles and clearing away loose mold residue that could seep into cracks and crevices, causing the problem to resurface at a later time.  These vacuums come in wet and dry varieties, to help you deal with moisture-induced conditions or pervasive mold dust, as the situation requires.

Manufacturers sell a diverse selection of anti-mold chemicals to be used during or after the remediation process.  There are coatings and sealants for various surface types to protect them against mold stains, soiling, water penetration and other residual effects.  There are also cleaning concentrates and agents that are formulated to wipe away mold residue from any area, without having to rely on hazardous ingredients that may damage furniture or harm people. 

For larger-scale operations that are at risk of mold particles spreading around or to adjacent areas, stores provide a number of containment system packages, whose purpose is to keep dust and other residue confined within a particular area while remediation is ongoing.  Dust containment kits consisting of poles and reusable barrier material allow a person to create an enclosed space within minutes without having to use scaffolding, ladders or tape.  Foam rails can be utilized to add an extra sealing layer along walls or the ceilings.  For those with the budget, makeshift containment structures can be built to include filtering doorways and other objects that ensure that the contamination is isolated.

Air scrubbers can either be of the portable or stationary variety, and are built to use carbon filters and disinfecting ultraviolet light to remove mold particles and other harmful things from the atmosphere.  These devices can be fairly heavy, with the lightest models still weighing in at over 30 pounds.  However, if you want to be certain that air you breathe in the formerly contaminated space is clean, this expense may be a worthwhile investment.

Carpets can be a particular pain for the mold remediator, as they can cause the trapping of mold residue within their fibers, where they can lay growing for a while until they are again launched into the air with spores.  Carpet extractors, special vacuums designed to suck these particles out of the rugs, may be seriously considered for the task.

Lastly, dehumidifiers ward off one of the leading causes of mold growth, moisture, maintaining a safe, dry atmosphere where mold cannot thrive.

Companies that provide mold remediation equipment sometimes put package deals together for startup remediation contractors, which includes an air scrubber, a HEPA vacuum, containment and barrier devices, and a dehumidifier.  Make sure you have the proper equipment before you rush into battle against mold infestation.
