Zep No-Scrub Mold and Mildew Remover

Once more into the breach, with your handy scrub brush and conventional cleanser, you decide to take on the seemingly endless hordes of mold growth that persist in your bathroom, kitchen and basement.  Cleaning up mold and mildew stains can be a bothersome chore, and more frustrating when you have to spend so much time and effort to do so, only to see it all come back in a week or two.  Perhaps so-called “no-scrub” cleaners will make the job that much more bearable, but a lot of these kinds of products require at least some manual effort, negating their impressive claim.  This is not the case with the cheap but effective Zep No-Scrub Mold and Mildew Stain Remover, which apparently functions exactly the way it is advertised – but with a significant drawback.

The label at the back of the Zep bottle provides some basic information about the product, including its claim that no scrubbing is necessary for the cleanser to perform.  It is recommended for fibreglass showers and tubs, grout and tiles, and it is suggested that one not use it on marble, natural stone, metal, vinyl, painted surfaces and formica.  This restriction is presumably due to the product’s potency.  All one has to do is spray Zep onto the surface that you desire cleaned, let it settle for a few minutes, and then rinse it away with fresh water.  Don’t wait for it to dry, as you may cause damage to the surface material.

Well, the good news about Zep is that it really works, wiping out mold stains like those commercials with dishwasher liquid on grime.  The stuff is bleach-based and mixed with other substances, and you can tell from the strong, pungent odor that emanates from the liquid that this cleanser certainly doesn’t mess around.

The problem with Zep, curiously, is exactly the reason it would come recommended – the cleanser is rather powerful, so much so that you should handle it with gloves, and with no small amount of care.  If it gets on your skin, it will cause skin damage, particularly if your skin is delicate and cannot tolerate chemicals.  The smell may make your eyes water, as it emanates a heavy chlorine scent, and you really should avoid inhaling it, even accidentally.  In fact, when using the product, you should open a few windows and set an electric fan to blow the air out of your house.  If your bathroom does not have windows, you are definitely going to regret using this product, unless you can stand not to use your bathroom for a day or so.

The verdict on Zep is that it will really work for you if you have some industrial-strength mold stains that require some rather tough hate.  However, for your standard-level pesky mold, this product may be perceived as overkill.  If you have young children at home, you should definitely avoid Zep, as the fumes it releases could cause problems, and we all know how children like to fiddle around with the chemical products that they discover in the house.  It’s definitely a cure for what ails your home, but it may be worse than the disease in some situations.
